Flowers and Motherly Love

3rd April 2011 – The day for celebrating our fantastic mothers in the UK. We can literally think of no better day to bombard our mothers with flowers.

A thoughtful flower delivery on Mother’s Day is one of the best ways to make up for not calling as often as we should, never cleaning our rooms when asked, moaning as she insists we’re not going out dressed like that, missing about 50% of our lunch dates with her because meetings at the office overrun, forgetting her birthday and turning up at the last minute with some ill-advised petrol station “gifts” (“Well Mum, I know how much you love charcoal and de-icer…”), putting empty milk cartons back in the fridge, tearing our hair out when she adamantly informs us that dinner at 3.30pm “beats the crowds” (even though it means being hungry again at 8pm!)… mums put up with a lot.

But we really do love our mothers 100%, 24/7 – and although we sometimes feel like it might actually kill us to admit she’s right, that’s one thing she needn’t worry about. We love that she collects our dirty dishes, always gives us a Christmas stocking, can’t quite get prefixes right and says “the Youtube”, walks our dog because we have a headache (she knows it’s a hangover!) and answers her phone any time – day or night.

Mother’s day flowers are definitely worth the few minutes it’ll take you to browse our online selection and fill out the online form.

No matter where you are, our friendly delivery drivers will be at Mum’s door on 3rd April!

So Many Beautiful Tulips

Tulips are amongst the brightest of all flower types. They have large but elegant and shapely blooms and come in perhaps the greatest variety of forms of any flowering plants. There are more than 100 different species in the tulip genus and countless varieties from dwarf to giant, super-slim to broad, fat cups. Some have feathered petals and the number of shades available is truly staggering.

These days there are even pure velvet black tulips and split-colour varieties are also quite common. There are mixed reds and whites, yellows and oranges, and plenty of other combinations. The slashes and splatters of colour mark out tulips as some of the most attractive and popular choices those who’d like to get flowers delivered.

The huge range of tulips is the result of careful cross breeding. For hundreds of years dedicated tulip growers have carefully worked to create new and vibrant varieties. Although the first plants were introduced to Western Europe through the Ottoman Empire in the 16th Century, the Netherlands quickly established itself as the great tulip centre. Today it exports more than a billion bulbs all across the world- that amounts to a lot of flowers delivered. It seems that everyone loves tulips.

Tulips are as ideal Mother’s Day flowers or for almost any other occasion. We have a special section just for them, and in it you’ll find plenty to delight and intrigue tulip lovers. If you’d like to send flowers online it’s always worth considering them as an option. Pick the recipient’s favourite colour and your gift is sure to be doubly appreciated.

Florists: Why Online?

Often, only a bunch of flowers will do, whether it’s Mother’s Day flowers or flowers on Valentine’s Day, and with lots of ways to buy flowers these days, sending that special bouquet has never been easier. In particular, it is now possible to buy posies online – but why exactly should you choose online florists when sending flowers?

The disadvantage with choosing your bouquet virtually is that you don’t get to physically see your flowers prior to purchase, however, when considered, this isn’t so much of a problem, as a high res pic can give you a pretty good idea about how the final product will look.

Also, a high street florist will often be making your bouquet to your specifications and therefore you might not even get to see your completed flowers before you purchase anyway, whereas by choosing a pre-arranged bouquet from online florists, you get to see exactly how your flowers will  look when they are delivered.

The big advantage when choosing flower online is one of convenience, and particularly in the winter months when venturing to your local florist might seem a little unappealing, buying your flowers online can save you loads of hassle, and you can order your flowers from the comfort and warmth of your own home.

If you order flowers online from eflorist.co.uk you also get the benefit of our infrastructure of local florists, which enables us to send flowers to all corners of the UK, ideal if you want to send your flowers long distance but don’t have the time to get there in person.

Buying Flowers Online

For hundreds, even thousands, of years people have been sending flowers. However, it is only in more recent times that the custom of sending flowers has really entered its full bloom, as with the advent of online florists, sending those fragrant posies has never been easier!

There are all sorts of occasions where sending flowers is appropriate, and lots of times where nothing other than a lovely bunch of flowers will do. For example, Mother’s Day flowers are something that are traditionally used to let your mum know just how you feel about her!

Often, however, even for these important occasions, work commitments, etc can get in the way of buying flowers, and going to a florist on your high street can be a big inconvenience – especially if you are looking for a specific kind of bouquet.

With an online florist, however, not only can you shop from the comfort of your own home, but you get access to a whole meadow of great bouquets, designed to be appropriate for all sorts of occasions, which means that online its easy to find your perfect bouquet.

Perhaps you want to send your bouquet long distance, and feel that the logistics involved are insurmountable. Well in the past they would be, however, we are an online florist and work in partnership with local florists all round the UK, we can get your bouquet exactly where you want it to go – even on the same day!

Giving Living Plants Instead Of Flowers

Flowers are a wonderful present. They bring light, colour and scent into the home and are a great way to show you care on a special occasion or any time at all. However, after a few weeks the flowers will be tired and wilted and they’ll be thrown out and composted or forgotten.

Sometimes, especially for mother’s day, it’s nice to give a longer lasting flower gift. Your mum spent years caring for you, and the chances are she’s still helping you as much as she can every day. With that ongoing love in mind, we’ve created a range of living, growing flower baskets and pots. Our living flower delivery service works just like on regular online flower deliveries. A local agent will take them right to your recipient’s door. If you order before 2pm (any day but Sunday) an eFlorist affiliate can deliver certain of our plant arrangements on the same day for almost all of the UK. It might take a little longer if you’re in the Scottish Highlands or Islands, for example, and some plants will take a day longer to deliver.

You can choose from orchids, which are ideal for hay fever sufferers and are happy and easy to care for as house plants, to terracotta pots of spring flowers for outdoors. They will be as beautiful next year as this year, and a constant reminder of someone’s love and appreciation.

For something a little different, why not send a bay or an olive tree? It’s sure to impress and make sure your gift stands out from the crowd.

Choosing The Right Mother’s Day Flowers

When thinking of Mother’s Day, one of the things that spring to mind is Mother’s Day flowers: the perfect way to express your admiration for the hardworking head of house! There are no set rules for what type of flowers is best suited for Mother’s Day; however, there are some ideas that might be helpful:

If there is a Mother’s Day flower, then it would probably a pink carnation, which symbolises the notions of someone being “always on your mind”. It is a refined poesy commonly given in more traditional dispositions.

Of course your flowers for Mother’s Day don’t have to be a pink carnation, and there are plenty of flowers that are also perfect to that special occasion that covey messages that would be perfect Mother’s Day.

Some other perfect Mother’s Day flowers include bluebells, which are a symbol of everlasting love; daisies, which symbolise love and loyalty; red tulips, which symbolise love; and orchids, which not only symbolise love, but are incomparably beautiful.

All kinds of roses are also perfect for Mother’s Day (and any other occasion for that matter!) as they not only convey ideas of love, but are perhaps the most traditional and elegant bloom and are therefore highly appropriate for Mother’s Day.

These are just some ideas for what flowers would be most suitable for Mother’s Day, but the most important factor should be your mother’s personality.

Buy flowers that are relevant to your Mother’s personality. Here at eFlorist, we have bouquets ranging in levels of subtlety and colour to make buying that personalised bouquet as easy as possible.

The History of Mother’s Day Flowers

Some people may regard Mother’s Day as a ‘Hallmark’ holiday, a recent holiday created for marketing purposes that has been over-commercialised and ruined.

The truth is that the celebration of motherhood and women has been around for a long time. The ancient Greeks and the Romans had a festival that worshipped mothers in mid-March, while Mothering Sunday has been observed by many Christian denominations.

The tradition of giving Mother’s Day flowers originates from the founder of Mother’s Day in the USA, Anna Jarvis. While she was campaigning for the establishment of a day to celebrate mothers, Anna would give out a single white carnation, symbolising the purity of a mother’s love.

China shares the symbolism of white carnation flowers with the Americans, though currently Chinese traditionalists are trying to get the emphasis off the carnation and onto the lily. The lily is already a powerful symbol for Chinese mothers as it is historically planted by Chinese women when their children leave home.

In the UK, Mother’s Day usually takes the form of Mothering Sunday. It used to be called Rose Sunday, and took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which was a holiday which families could share together. To celebrate families and mothers, roses were often passed out at church.

Flowers make a perfect Mother’s Day gift because they stand for beauty, purity and life. Flowers for Mother’s Day are so appreciated because mothers also rarely buy them for themselves, so stand on the side of history and buy your mother flowers this Mother’s Day.
