Flowers For A Child’s Funeral

There is nothing more tragic than the loss of a child. A sweet, innocent life taken prematurely is both a lesson in appreciating every single moment we have on this earth, as well as a time of great sorrow and pain for the family of the child; a heart breaking tragedy from which many never recover.

While there is often nothing you can say or do to offer the comfort you wish you could at a time like this, sometimes simply giving a beautiful arrangement of flowers to the family will let them know, peacefully and unobtrusively, that you are thinking of them and love them.

Here at Eflorist we have carefully selected some special flowers for funerals that are particularly meant for children’s tributes. We hope that in some small way these funeral flowers will help you to express your sympathy and support to the family at this time of incredible loss.

For Christian funerals, we offer two very lovely small cross tributes. Our purple and white cross (Ref: FNR1005) features hydrangea, lilacs, mini calla lilies, orchids, and a bit of foliage and organza ribbon. It stands 46 cm high (or 18 inches.) Our other small cross (Ref: FNR1020) features chrysanthemums, roses, and Eustoma in white and pale pink. It is 61 cm wide (or 24 inches.)

Other tributes for children include a five point star with white Gypsophila and pink orchids, a teddy bear with white chrysanthemums and yellow freesias and roses, an angel Gypsophila, silver leaves, and white tulips, and a white and green spray including white calla lilies, freesia, and roses.

New Year Celebrations: Hogmanay!

Ringing in the New Year as jubilantly as possible is our aim this year! Our florists in Edinburgh will be run off their feet making flower deliveries across the city! Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations include the torchlight procession, Concert in the Gardens, street party and Keilidh experience (best get you dancing shoes on!)

Dating back to Norse celebrations of winter solstice, Hogmanay has done nothing but grow in popularity. January 2nd is a Scottish national holiday, so the hardest partygoers keep going from December 31st to the morning of January 3rd!

Every region of Scotland carries its own Hogmanay traditions – perhaps the most obscure of which belongs to the fisherman of Dundee, who decorate herrings!

Arguably the most enduring of contemporary Hogmanay traditions is “Auld Lang Syne”. Indeed the popularity of singing this Robert Burns poem has reached across the globe. One of our staff spent last New Year in Seoul, Korea, and was rather surprised to find herself part of a huge street party belting-out “Auld Lang Syne” at midnight!  The common custom to stand in a circle and link arms is one of our favourite parts of New Year!

Whether you go to Hogmanay and leave family at home, or perhaps you’re all off to Edinburgh together, invest in one of our gorgeous flower bouquets to say “HAPPY NEW YEAR!” to your nearest and dearest (no matter how far away they may be!)

The Language of Flowers: A – M

A whisper back in history; clandestine lovers, great friends, enemies and close family often communicated their missives via the secret language of flowers.

Acacia: The bloom of secret love is often included in small amounts amongst seemingly innocent arrangements.

Almond Blossom: Hope

Aloe: Grief

Apple Blossom: The flower of good luck.

Azalea: The fragility of the human condition. These flowers were often passed between those enduring long separations, both romantic and platonic.

Begonia: This bloom carries a message of warning.

Bluebell: The humble sender.

Carnation: Carnation flowers have a bunch of their own meanings for each colour – Red (longstanding admiration), purple (a fickle nature), white (innocence), yellow (disappointment or rejection), and even solid colours (yes) and striped varieties (no) carry covert signals.

Daffodil: Respect and admiration, usually between friends.

Forget-me-not: Not the most well hidden of meanings – true, enduring love.

Geranium: Friendship

Hemlock: Suspicion that the receiver is plotting to kill the sender (rather dramatic!)

Iris: Hope and faith.

Jasmine: Grace and poise.

Lavender: The little purple sign of devotion.

Lilac: First love.

Lily: Another of the flower families with a variety of meanings – white lily (purity, innocence), Tiger lily (wealth and prosperity), orange lily (hate), Calla lily (stunning beauty), Lily of the Valley (regained happiness) and yellow lilies (ecstatic) are particularly popular.

Magnolia: An adorable nature.

Marigold: A comforter to grief.

Never mind saying it with words. Fancy sending flowers to communicate your own message? Order flowers online with us and literally say it with flowers!

How to Choose Christmas Flower Arrangements

Flowers make lovely Christmas decorations and thoughtful Christmas gifts. Whatever you want to purchase Christmas flowers for, here are some tips to get you started.

If you are purchasing the flowers as a gift, figure out what type of arrangement would be best for the recipient. If the recipient is a spouse or lover, you should try to choose romantic flowers which still have a Christmas theme. If it is a child, a grandmother, or a best friend, try to choose flowers which are significant to the person, or choose colours you know the person likes.

If the flowers are for decorative purposes, think about the overall theme of the room or house you are buying them for. If they are for your own home, this is a lot easier. Decide what colours or themes you want, and try to choose flowers which complement each other. If you want a classic, Victorian Christmas theme, choose old fashioned flowers like red roses, sprigs of mistletoe, and maybe some vases of holly boughs or potted poinsettias.

Purchasing Christmas flower arrangements for someone else’s home is a little bit harder, unless you want to go with the obvious, classic choices. But some people like to decorate in unusual styles and non traditional colours for Christmas. Find out what theme or colours are expected, and then choose an arrangement that will match.

Purchasing Christmas flowers from an online flower shop is a good idea because you can have them delivered virtually anywhere.

Choosing Flowers – Carnations And Green Foliage

Carnations come in perhaps the widest colour range of any flower variety commonly found in a florist’s shop. Even pale Nile green ones are available. These are absolutely lovely and sure to surprise anyone lucky enough to receive an arrangement that uses them as a feature. Some florists now include them quite often, for example as a complement to white roses.

Split colour carnations are also quite common. Varieties shot with white and red or yellow and orange are among the many combinations available and no more expensive to buy than solid colour flowers of the same quality.

If you order flowers online for a little girl or a teenager, there is a lovely trick you can do with to add interest to the flowers. Choose any arrangement containing white carnations, preferably as young buds. Present them already inside an opaque vase but add a generous splash of blue food colouring to the water beforehand. The carnations will suck up the dye and turn sky blue as they open.

Because carnations have very thin stems and relatively small flowers, it’s best to combine them with plenty of green foliage if they are to be the focus of the bouquet. The foliage gives a background for the splashes of intricate colour provided by the carnations and stops them looking spindly or squashed together. Green leaves add something to most bouquets, but are particular useful with this kind of flower.

Carnations are among the best flowers to give to hay fever sufferers. They have a delicate scent but won’t activate an allergic reaction in most people who have difficulties with pollen.

Dinner Party Flowers

Not all flowers are destined to be gifts. If you order flowers online you might be aiming to decorate your own home for a special occasion or just to brighten it up.

One of the most popular reasons to arrange a flower delivery is so you have something spectacular to use as the centrepiece for the dinner table. If you’re planning a dinner party for Christmas or just to be social, using cut flowers to decorate the table is a nice idea. Here are a few tips to help you get the best results:

Plan ahead and order in advance, but arrange the cheap flower delivery for the day of the party. That way the flowers will look their absolute best.

Pick a colour that goes with the dining room decor. Achieving a pleasant visual effect could be as simple as choosing pale pink flowers to go with the napkins, for example.

Order a few matching arrangements of flowers for the dinner table, the entrance hallway, and the coffee area if you are going to seat your guests in more than one room over the course of the evening. They don’t have to be the same. One big, bold bouquet on the main table and one or two smaller bunches with the same colour scheme will do just as well.

Avoid highly scented flowers. Letting your guests smell cooking aromas will whet their appetites, and one or two on the guest list might suffer from hay fever or allergies. Flowers with little scent are unlikely to cause them any problems.

Choosing Flowers – Gerberas And Daisies

At eFlorist we can send a huge variety of flowers all over the UK and Ireland, or arrange for flower delivery almost anywhere in the world. Closer to home we have a huge network of independent local florists who will make up the design of your choice and deliver the flowers direct to the recipient’s door themselves. Further a field it’s a little trickier because the kinds of flowers available at different times of year are different from one country to the next, but our telephone advisors can help you pick a bouquet from the range of the destination country.

It’s not always easy for the most people to know which flowers are which, so we thought it would be useful to introduce some of the most popular varieties used in floristry. It should help you make informed choices about flower deliveries in other countries as well as picking bouquets for more local gifts.

Some of the most popular flowers in modern arrangements are gerberas. These are the ones that look like giant daisies, and in fact they are part of the daisy family. They are available across much of the globe and come in a wide variety of really bright colours – pinks, oranges, yellows, and white. Because of their size, gerberas often make up a large part of the colour in any arrangement.

Like all daisies, gerberas are cheerful flowers and ideally suited to happy occasions. They also often heavily scented. On one hand that means more delicate flower smells will be overpowered, but on the other it means a flowery scent that can fill a whole room.

Making Sure You Get The Right Flowers For Funerals

Funerals are never the happiest of occasions, but unfortunately most of us have to attend one at some time or another. Flowers are a major component of such an event, and if you want to convey the right sentiment it’s essential that you choose carefully.

The traditional funeral flowers have always been lilies, and they’re certainly a beautiful and sophisticated option. But, a lot of people choose this variety in their everyday life, and if you don’t want to forever associate your favourite bloom with the funeral you went to there are plenty of other options as well.

The list really is endless, but the general rule of giving funeral flowers is to make your choice as classy, and often as subtle as possible. Muted and pastel colours are ideal, and it’s also a good idea to go for the favourite flowers of the deceased (if you know what they were) as this is sure to be appreciated by everyone present. There’s always the option of going for wreaths as well, but in a lot of cases simple bouquets are just as effective.

If you really want to make sure you get the right flowers for funerals, it’s a good idea to leave it up to the experts. Professional florists will be able to convey just the right sentiment in the bouquet to give you just what you’re looking for, so should always be considered. Coming to us here at eFlorist should be at the top of your list of priorities, and we’ll be able to point you in the direction of the right flowers for you.
